We describe a procedure, in the context of the characteristic formulation, for prescribing initial data for a polytrope that is in an (approximately) circular orbit around a Schwarzschild black hole. We propose a series of tests which can give us an indication of the range of applicability of the characteristic formulation approach to the binary BH-NS system.
