Quantum Fluctuations of Radiation Pressure

Next Slide | Back to EGM4 Program

Quantum fluctuations of electromagnetic radiation pressure are discussed. We use an approach based on the quantum stress tensor to calculate the fluctuations in velocity and position of a mirror subjected to electromagnetic radiation. Our results are somewhat smaller than those previously found by other methods. This implies that the radiation pressure noise in laser interferometer detectors of gravity waves, such as LIGO, is less than previously thought.
